2. pact (noun) – agreement, treaty, deal.
3. free trade (noun) –  a policy to eliminate barriers/limits/regulations against imports and exports.
4. avert (verb) – prevent, stop, avoid.
5. in the midst of (phrase) – in the middle of.
6. trade war (noun) – a condition in which a country increase tariffs on foreign goods and impose quota restrictions to restrict other countries’ trade.
7. scrap (verb) – abandon, cancel, abolish.
8. protectionist (adjective) – relating to the use of tariff and non-tariff restrictions on imports to protect domestic producers from foreign competition.
