Word of the Day (austerity)-31MAR20

Today’s “Word of the Day” is austerity and it is a noun meaning “It is an economic policy that aims to reduce government budget deficits through reductions in government spending, increases in tax revenues, or both (in the wake of the financial crisis). It simply means “cost-cutting” or “deficit-cutting” by a government”.

Example Sentence: Manolis Glezos, who died Monday at the age of 97, was a Greek resistance hero who tore down the Nazi swastika flag from the Acropolis during the Second World War, survived two death sentences and remained an activist even in old age. He opposed his government’s austerity measures in the wake of the financial crisis and campaigned for Germany to repay money it had forced Greece to loan it during the war.
