- Delhi liquor scam case (noun) – Central agencies (CBI and ED) arrested top political leaders, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) for alleged corruption and kickbacks related to the now-scrapped 2021-22 Delhi Excise Policy. Findings: The Supreme Court eventually granted bail to the key accused, heavily criticizing the investigating agencies for keeping them in extended custody without starting a trial, and firmly reiterating the legal principle that “bail is the rule, jail is an exception.”
- G.N. Saibaba case (noun) – G.N. Saibaba, a 90% physically disabled former Delhi University professor, was arrested in 2014 under the UAPA for alleged Maoist links and was initially sentenced to life imprisonment. Findings: After a decade in prison, he was fully acquitted by the Bombay High Court in 2024 (and upheld by the Supreme Court), with the court citing a complete lack of credible evidence and declaring the prosecution’s procedural sanctions “null and void.” He tragically passed away a few months after his release.
