- anthropocene (noun) – a new period/epoch in which human’s collective activities dominate the planetary mechanism; the period of Earth’s history during which humans have a decisive influence on the state, dynamics and future of the Earth system. It is widely agreed that the Earth is currently in this state.
- epoch (noun) – era, period, time.
- humanity (noun) – humankind, the human race, people.
- sobering (adjective) – sensible/thoughtful; logical, realistic.
- irrevocably (adverb) – irreversibly, irreparably, unchangeably.
- uninhabitable (adjective) – unsuitable (for living in).
- pervasive (adjective) – ubiquitous, omnipresent/present everywhere/rampant, widespread.
- persistent (adjective) – constant, continuous, never-ending.

- radionuclide (noun) – radioactive nuclide, radioisotope or radioactive isotope; is an atom that has excess nuclear energy, making it unstable (nuclide is a type of atom whose nuclei have specific numbers of protons and neutrons).
- coral reefs (noun) – a ridge or mound of lime stone, the upper surface of which is near the surface of the sea and which is formed of calcium carbonate by the actions of organisms, chiefly corals.
- nuclear detonation (noun) – explosion/blowing up of a (nuclear) bomb; blast.
