  1. compound (verb) – increase, intensify, heighten, complicate, aggravate, worsen, exacerbate.
  2. deficit (noun) – deficiency, shortage, scarcity, insufficiency, inadequacy.
  3. water holding capacity (WHC) (noun) – the amount of water that a given soil can hold for a particular use.
  4. reservoir (noun) – a natural or artificial place (lake/pond/dam/etc.) where water is stored.
  5. Central Water Commission (CWC) (noun) – a premier Technical Organization of India in the field of Water Resources and is presently functioning as an attached office of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India. The Commission is entrusted with the general responsibilities of initiating, coordinating and furthering in consultation of the State Governments concerned, schemes for control, conservation and utilization of water resources throughout the country, for purpose of Flood Control, Irrigation, Navigation, Drinking Water Supply and Water Power Development.

  17. erratic (adjective) – unpredictable, inconsistent, changeable, irregular, unsteady, unreliable, uncertain.
  18. isolate (verb) – separate, set apart, keep apart, detach.
  19. influence (noun) – effect, impact, control.
  20. whereas (conjunction) – compared with the fact that, but, instead, contrarily.
  21. meteorologist (noun) – weather forecaster.
  22. on record (phrase) – officially measured/noted.
  23. meteorological (adjective) – relating to the branch of science that deals with phenomena (events) of the atmosphere or weather.
  24. cast (verb) – register a vote; vote.
  25. forecast (noun) – prediction, indication, projection, prognosis, speculation, calculation (of future events or trends).

  32. catchment (noun) – an area of land where water collects when it rains.
  33. persist (verb) – continue, carry on, go on, keep going.
