The Hindu Editorial (Base boost) – June 15, 2023:

  1. inflation (noun) – simply meaning “cost of living”; increase of price level of goods & services and vice versa decrease of currency value.
  2. erode (verb) – (gradually) undermine, weaken, spoil, deteriorate, destroy.
  3. purchasing power (noun) – the ability to buy something (goods/services).
  4. pace (noun) – rate, speed.
  5. Retail or Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation (noun) – The change in the price index of the basket of consumer goods and services over a period of time is referred to as CPI-based inflation or retail inflation.
  6. Wholesale or Wholesale price Index (WPI) inflation (noun) – The change in the price index of the basket of wholesale goods (and no services) over a period of time is referred to as WPI-based inflation or wholesale inflation.
  7. propel (verb) – prompt, drive, spur, impel, force.
  8. largely (adverb) – mostly, mainly, generally.
  9. elevated (adjective) – increased, raised.
  10. year-on-year (adjective) – year over year (for comparison).
  11. price gain (noun) – a general increase in the price of something.

  13. headline inflation (noun) – it is a measure of the total inflation within an economy, including commodities such as food and energy prices. 
  14. core inflation (noun) – it is a measure of the total inflation within an economy, excluding commodities such as food and energy prices (which change frequently).

  16. measure (noun) – action, act, move, step, procedure.
  17. validate (verb) – uphold, support, justify, endorse, confirm.
  18. pause (verb) – stop temporarily/briefly.
  19. tightening (noun) – an act of making something stricter/rigorous.
  20. month-on-month (adjective) – used to compare data for one month with that in previous months.
  21. provisional (adjective) – temporary, short-term, interim, transitional.
  22. Consumer Price Index (CPI) (noun) – The CPI looks at the basket of consumer goods and services and it measures the change in price of this basket over a period of time. To put it simply, the CPI monitors retail prices at a certain level for a particular commodity.
  23. sequential (adjective) – happened in sequence/order/succession.
  24. reading (noun) – figure, indication, record, measurement.
  25. deceleration (noun) – slowing down, easing off, reduction, diminishing, lessening.
  26. basis point (BPS) (noun) – a unit of measure used in finance to describe the percentage change in the value or rate of a financial instrument. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01% (1/100th of a percent). Used for measuring change in interest rate/yield.
  27. easing (noun) – reduction, lessening, decrease, moderation.
  28. deflation (noun) – a decrease in the general price level of goods and services.
  29. cereal (noun) – a grain or plants that produce it  (for example-wheat, maize, rice & etc.).
  30. weight (noun) – larger number, bulk, lion’s share.
  31. ease (verb) – lessen, reduce, decrease, moderate.
  32. moderation (noun) – reduction, lessening, decrease, easing.
  33. beverage (noun) – a drink, such as tea, coffee, liquor, beer, milk, juice, or soft drinks, usually excluding water.
  34. account for (phrasal verb) – constitute, make up, comprise, form, compose, represent.
  35. witness (verb) – indicate, show, reveal, confirm, be evidence/proof of.
  36. pulses (noun) – edible seeds (chickpeas, lentils, beans). (dals).
  37. appreciable (adjective) – considerable, substantial, significant, sizeable.
  38. acceleration (noun) – increase, quickening, stepping up.
  39. deflate (verb) – reduce, slow down, lessen price levels in (an economy).
  40. log (verb)  – achieve, attain; register, record.
  41. dairy (adjective) – relating to the products made from milk.
  42. of concern (phrase) – If something is of concern, then it is worrying & unsatisfactory.
  43. hover (verb) – remain at a level.
  44. sequentially (adverb) – in succession, successively, continuously.
  45. disconcerting (adjective) – discomfiting, unsettling, disturbing, troubling.
  46. clip (noun) – rate, speed, pace.
  47. acknowledge (verb) – accept, recognize, realize.
  48. sensitivity (noun) – responsiveness, vulnerability, reactivity, susceptibility.
  49. due (adjective) – expected, anticipated, scheduled for.
  50. household (noun) – family, house.
  51. perception (noun) – understanding, discernment, recognition/realization; interpretation.
  52. run (verb) – range, continue, maintain.
  53. forecast (noun) – prediction, indication, projection, calculation, speculation, prognosis (of future events or trends).
  54. peg (at) (verb) – fix, set, hold, limit (a price, rate, or amount) at a particular level.
  55. have one’s task cut out (phrase) – be faced with a tough task/work to do; faced with a lot of hard work to accomplish something.
  56. tame (verb) – control, curb, mitigate, moderate.
  57. so as to (phrase) – in order to.
