The Hindu Editorial (Under control) – May 16, 2025:

  1. inflation (noun) – simply meaning “cost of living”; increase of price level of goods & services and vice versa decrease of currency value.
  2. retail or consumer price index (CPI) inflation (noun) – The change in the price index of the basket of consumer goods and services over a period of time is referred to as CPI-based inflation or retail inflation.
  3. wholesale or wholesale price Index (WPI) inflation (noun) – The change in the price index of the basket of wholesale goods (and no services) over a period of time is referred to as WPI-based inflation or wholesale inflation.
  4. alike (adverb) – equally, similarly.
  5. (the) easing (noun) – reduction, decrease, decline, moderation, diminishing, lessening.

  23. liquidity (noun) – (in the banking system) it refers to readily available cash that banks need to meet short-term business and financial needs.
  24. liquidity squeeze (noun) – credit crunch; a problem related to the availability of the money in the short-term (debt/dues) and which is giving hesitation to the money lending institutions to give out loans (funds) from their reserves.
  25. squeeze (noun) – a strong financial pressure, mainly a restriction on borrowing, spending, or investment in a financial crisis.
  26. crunch (noun) – severe shortage.
  27. result in (verb) – cause, lead to, bring on, bring about, produce, give rise to.

  41. monetary policy (noun) – monetary policy refers to the use of monetary instruments under the control of the central bank to regulate magnitudes such as interest rates, money supply, and availability of credit with a view to achieving the ultimate objective of economic policy mentioned in the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
  42. the monetary policy committee (MPC) (noun) – it is a six-member panel that is expected to bring “value and transparency” to rate-setting decisions. It will feature three members from the RBI — the Governor, a Deputy Governor and another official — and three independent members to be selected by the Government. The MPC will meet four times a year to decide on monetary policy by a majority vote.

  44. Gross domestic product (GDP) (noun) – a measure of economic activity in a country. It is the total value of a country’s annual output of goods and service.
  45. in line with (phrase) – in agreement with, in alignment with, in accordance with, consistent with or compatible with.
  46. crude oil (noun) – the raw natural resource that is extracted from the earth and refined into products such as gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and other petroleum products.
  47. Wholesale Price Index (WPI) (noun) – The WPI looks at a basket of wholesale goods (goods purchased in large quantities by businesses directly from manufacturers with the intent of reselling them to retailers). the WPI tracks prices at the factory gate before the retail level.
  48. dynamic (adjective) – vital, effective, strong, powerful, potent, aggressive.
  49. supposedly (adverb)reportedly, seemingly, apparently, allegedly, professedly, ostensibly, purportedly. ​
  50. virtually (adverb) – practically, effectively, in effect, actually, in reality.
  51. sham (noun) – something looking real or genuine, but isn’t. something that is false, fake, or deceptive; fake, pretence, fraud, deception.
  52. in any case (phrase) – anyway, whatever happens, whatever happened.
